TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(21-7-2003) Denmark belongs to Northern Germany at least
concerning the Bénéteau 25 sailors! Mads Christensen from Frederiksberg
sailed to victory on Monday (21 July) in the Travemuende Week and with it,
won the open Northern German Championship. The 36-year old prevented a
double victory for the brothers Oliver and René Schwall, who finished second
and third. The Europe class was lucky enough to end the only one other race
beside three of the Bénéteau class. And Janika Puls (15) from Luebeck
underlined her hopes with a first. All other courses had to be abandoned for
the day, due to lack of wind.
In the beginning of the fourth race day of the Travemuende Week, the wind
was very low on all ten courses in the Luebeck bight. Thunder-clouds paved
the sky, but could not decide to unload. Instead the sky finally cleared and
a light sea breeze allowed some races in the afternoon. This was too late
for the 505 class, who celebrated its winner from yesterday without further
racing: Michael Roessler and Holger Neuhaus (Bochum, Germany) sailed faster
than the second placed Joerg Haeger and Heini Rix.
Fully ambitioned the Bénéteau class fought in the difficult wind conditions
of 4 to 6 knots. Olympic bronze medallist 2000 in the Tornado, René Schwall
lost his chance of winning overall in the second race of the day. He crossed
the line as tenth and while he already played his discard on the day before,
the victory was gone. “This was one breakout to much”, said the doctor from
Kiel, Germany, “although we are strong in light winds”. His brother Oliver
did not scored the big points, but sailed constantly good, which was
honoured by a second place overall. Clear and sovereign was the series
(2,3,2,1,1 ) of Mads Christensen and his crew from Denmark, who earned the
loudest cheers in the prize giving.
While the Olympic Tornado class had to cancel racing again, because the wind
limit was not reached, the fun factor went up in the evening: The Mayor of
Luebeck, Bernd Saxe and the Travemuende Week chief organizer Claus-Dieter
Stolze went sailing in front of the gazing public. Saxe stepped aboard the
Tornado of nine-times Travemuende Week winner Christian Sach (Zarnekau,
Germany) and Stolze sailed with multiple World and European Champion Roland
Gaebler living in Tinglev, Denmark. “The feeling was wonderful, but a bit
more wind would have been great”, said a satisfied Mayor, back on the shore.
“At least we could sail with the gennaker and went out into the trapeze”,
added Stolze.
